Rhea Machado – Instructor / Trainer
Rhea’s interest in canine behavior and training began when she rescued an abused Staffordshire Bull Terrier who required significant rehabilitation. Rhea spent months learning from an experienced trainer and behaviorist in order to turn an aggressive dog into a controlled member of a family. This led to a lifelong passion for working with people and their dogs to ensure a happy and healthy life together.
Rhea trained and competed with her rescue hound Maya in obedience, rally and scent work until getting her most recent K9 partner.
K9 Nox and Rhea have been training with Sarasota K9 Search and Rescue for 3 years and received their Human Remain Detection Certification from North American Police Working Dog Association this past December. When they are not training for SAR work they enjoy Competition Obedience and Rally O. Nox has achieved his Companion Dog, Rally Novice and Canine Good Citizen titles as well as having served as a Therapy Dog.

It’s never too soon or too late to start teaching your dogs—as long as your puppy is at least eight weeks old. In the basic class, your dog and/or puppy will master the basic commands on a leash in a class setting. This setting will help your dog learn how to handle distractions and focus on you.
Training will be customized to your dog during your initial consultation and can include a range of topics and commands, including:
- Puppy Socialization
- Name Recognition
- Introduction to the collar and lose leash walking
- Crate Training
- Owner education of Do’s and Don’ts with your puppy for household manners
- Puppy games – building your relationship
- Hand signals
Basic learning theory:
luring | shaping | reward | timing | criteria | proofing/handling distraction | getting and keeping focus | rate of reinforcement
House-training | crate training | socialization | anti-jumping | bite inhibition | handling | food guarding
Motivating your puppy:
Use of food and toys as rewards
Use of: Body posture, leash handling, the tone of voice
Each week, you will be given homework to practice as you prepare your dog for the AKC ‘Canine Good Citizen’ test. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program is sponsored by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and is open to all dogs: mixed breeds as well as purebreds. Goals of the CGC Program are to teach responsible dog ownership to owners and provide basic training and good manners to dogs. The 10-step CGC test will be conducted at the end of the basic obedience session. Owners of dogs that pass the test may send their results to AKC for a certificate that is suitable for framing. A full description of the test may be found at the AKC website.
The basic Adult Class is for dogs that have no major behavior problems—dogs with mild aggression, fears, and phobias are welcome. If you are not sure if group class is the way to go with your dog, please talk to one of our trainers to see which program may work best for you and your dog. This class has no restrictions on what training equipment is used. Our system is very flexible and our goal is to leave you with a well-mannered and happy, reliable dog after graduation!
We are passionate about the sport of dog obedience.
A competition obedience dog learns to work smoothly and accurately with his handler as he performs a variety of obedience exercises. We have classes to prepare you for every level of obedience competition with an emphasis on fun and perfection. We also teach many of our competition students through private lessons.
Rules and regulations as well as entering a show will also be addressed. All the exercises will be taught from introduction through proofing.
Rally O Basics
In addition, we offer a Rally O Basics class. Rally (or Rally Obedience) is a competitive sport in which the dog and handler, as a team, complete a course moving at a brisk pace. The team is judged and timed. This dog sport draws on obedience behaviors that are useful in “real life” situations with your dogs.
In Rally O, a dog and handler move briskly from station to station in a course. Each station along the route holds a sign indicating what behavior(s) to perform (e.g., sit-down-sit) before the team can move on. No course is the same, so Rally O is exciting and new every time you do it.
Teamwork and fun will be emphasized in this class! And, yes, you can talk to your dog! Rally O supports the growing trends to involve all family members, including children, in raising terrific pets. Anyone can do Rally Obedience. The exercises introduced in this class will give dog owners the opportunity to work on attention and basic maneuvers and learn the AKC Novice and Advanced signs while building a great working relationship with their canine partners. Dogs entering this class should have basic obedience. Class size is limited to 6 dogs.
Special Behavioral Problems
Because obedience training is not always the answer to correct unacceptable, and problematic behaviors, you may want to schedule a consultation with Dog World Sarasota to learn how to curb even the most severe problems. We can teach you the best way to communicate with your pet to correct unwanted behaviors.
Let us help you isolate the root cause of your dog’s behavioral issues and develop a plan of action to correct any unwanted behavior. The goal of our Behavior Issue Resolution Training is to find solutions to existing problems. For severe cases, we may offer Boarding and Training together!
Personal Protection (Guard Dog) Training
For this course, you’ll need to contact us at 941-377-DOGS (3647) and let us evaluate your dog before you get started.
K-9 Scent Training
Our scent training classes use the same foundation training methods we use to train Law Enforcement Detection K9’s but are designed for pet dogs and owners who want to have fun with their dogs. This easy-to-learn activity builds confidence and focus in many dogs, and provides a safe way to keep dogs fit and healthy through mental and physical exercise.
The K9 Scent class will prepare you and your dog to compete for AKC and UKC Scent Work or “Nosework” competitions. Our Scent Work teams excel at trials. Come join our teams.
At Dog World Sarasota, we also offer both on and off-site individual training courses. These courses are available upon request and the price will be determined based on your needs. Call 941-377-DOGS (3647) to learn more today.
Before making any suggestions on our dog training program options, we want to meet with you and your dog, assess their behaviors and get to know you and your dog. We offer a free evaluation which allows us to understand your obedience training needs and goals, and just as important, your dog’s needs.
Schedule your evaluation today by calling 941-377-DOGS (3647)!
